Nutrition is remarkable in its ability to have people with completely opposite views saying they have science to support completely opposite views.
Frustrating isn’t it? What are we supposed to believe?
In this training, I’m going to explain why we got it wrong when we counted calories and what we should really focus on.
And that leads us to Dynamism Biohack #5: Metabolic Switches.
Calories, that’s a bad thing from the past. if your doctor is telling you to count your calories or is worried about your calories. fire that doctor. That ideology is what killed my mother, and it may kill you. Say what? Find out next.
METABOLIC SWITCHES
There are two schools of thought when it comes to calories. Most people these days believe that a calorie equals a calorie, which is one of the reasons why fat has been demonized.
Most people think that if you want to get rid of the fat in your body, you need to lessen the amount of fat you are eating. They put a name to it, they called it the energy balance theory. Hypothetically, energy coming into the body needs to be matched with energy going out of the body. They taught us to balance calories in with the calories burned; that would be awesome if that were true, use common sense, it is not true.
The science points to the fact that there is something else going on; essentially, the only time that a calorie equals a calorie is in a science lab vacuum!
If you take, for example, 100 calories of honey and 100 calories of butter, and burn that in a lab vacuum, they will both produce 100 calories of energy. A calorie equals a calorie in a vacuum, but your body is not a vacuum.
When that fat comes into your body, your body has different metabolic switches that are pulled, depending on the type of calorie, and that is a very important fact. This is juxtaposed from the energy balance “calorie in and calorie out” approach, otherwise called the metabolic or hormonal hypothesis. so, different calories affect you differently.
COUNTING CALORIES MYTH
The caloric comparison is an important point to consider, and this is the research that brings it home for me. Dr. David Ludwig, who wrote a book called Always Hungry, is a fascinating guy who has an M.D. and a Ph. D. is a professor at Harvard’s School of Medicine and Harvard School of Nutrition in their School of Public Health. He brought people into his lab and split them into two groups. Both groups got a milkshake that had the same breakdown, regarding carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and sweetness.
However, he altered one little part of the experiment. One group got what he called fast-acting carbohydrates, and the other group got what he called slow-acting carbohydrates. In this experiment, he compared the fast-acting carbohydrates versus the slow-acting carbohydrates, but calories were the same, and the breakdown was the same. Now, the “calorie in, calorie out” energy balance theory would say that those should impact the body in the same way- a calorie is a calorie, right? Wrong.
Ludwig found that two things happen when you give this individual a fast-acting carbohydrate. First, those fast-acting carbohydrates pull different metabolic switches. Your blood sugar skyrockets and then it plummets. This reaction chain is different from that of the slow-acting carbohydrate, which does not have this same high and then a low. This is a very important distinction. Secondly, he took these individuals, and he put them into a functional MRI.
He measured their blood sugar levels, and their hunger levels, which yielded surprising results. The fast-acting group was hungrier than the slow-acting group, and when he put them in a Functional M.R.I., the group that had the fast-acting carbohydrates had a part of their brain light up. That part of the brain is called the nucleus accumbens, which is the same as your reward center. The reward center lights up for cocaine addicts and alcoholics, just as it lights up for people who are consuming fast-acting carbohydrates.1
That’s insane, isn’t it?!
This discovery was an astonishing thing to consider. As a result, when you want to optimize your nutrition, you have to start by eliminating the fast-acting carbohydrates, since they did not exist a century and a half ago. We come all the way back to the fact that a calorie is not a calorie. It’s not about calories in and calories out. It’s about the fact that different calories impact our bodies in a variety of ways. They pull different metabolic switches, and if you want to conquer your cravings, you must beat those addictions to these refined carbohydrates and get them eliminated from your diet.
